Summer Bulletin
The following paragraph should have been included in the Summer Bulletin but somehow it disappeared!
"The Bulletin – electronic version and/or hard copy
As a result of a query at the last Delegates meeting all Secretaries were e-mailed to ascertain how they wished to receive the Bulletin in future. Despite a recent reminder a number of Secretaries have still not responded but based on the replies so far some clubs have opted for receiving an electronic version only, some for hard copy only and many would like both.
In view of the differing responses the most practical solution for your Editor would be to circulate the Bulletin both electronically and as hard copy. Those Secretaries not on the internet in any event should receive a paper version to read and every club should have a copy to place on their club's notice board. Anyone receiving an unwanted electronic version can always delete it. This issue is being circulated to Secretaries by e-mail and by post as a trial; a final decision in the light of feedback will be taken at the AGM . " Neville

{Extending the dynamic range of your images}
Alan Crotty has sent the following information for your enlightenment, I quote his email:
"This is a command line programme produced by Max Lyons (who answers any questions personally, you don't get that from Bill Gates). Command Line Progs are horrible to use, so there is a Pro version with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) much more friendly!
www.tawbaware.com
www.tawbaware.com:80/tufuse.htm
The programme is used to combine two or more exposures of the same subject to extend the dynamic range. You can either take two or more bracketed shots or just create a light medium and dark version in Photoshop. Load the shots into TuFuse and in a couple of mins you have a jolly good extended dynamic range shot.

The Orphan Works Bill
Members should be aware, especially if they earn their bread by photography that it is the intention of the US Senate to try to pass a bill known as the Orphan Works Bill. In essence, the purpose of this bill is to enable anyone who wishes to use an image but cannot find the copyright owner to use the image after only a cursory search. It will be encumbant on photographers, graphic artists, designers etc. to register all rights in a public register and if they don't, anyone may use the image with very little risk of legal action. It has become known as the Thieves Charter and will ultimately affect all folk who produce artistic work. The EU is also intent on following suit unless it is stopped, one argument being that nobody can filch music etc., so why should they be able to steal images. If you want to read up on this Bill, try Googling 'Orphan Works Bill', it should turn up all the details, I have some information on it but can't publish it all here. I am concerned about the images we have displayed on this site and am presently reducing them as much as possible and declaring a copyright interest. In addition I could put a 'transparent' copyright notice on each image but am reluctant to do that as it spoils the look but may have to resort to that if this legislation is allowed to go through. If you feel strongly about this and many do, especially the professionals, you are urged to contact an action group, who will be lobbying our ministers when the subject arises here but in the meantime, if the US passes this Bill, it will impact on us here. Toast and Colour Management
by Steve Upton
Dr John Bowsher has been rummaging around in the depths of his computer and come across a very useful article by Steve Upton that you may find helpful in plumbing the depths of colour management. Steve has kindly allowed us to reproduce it here and would like us to also visit his website. Another site you may find useful is the colorwiki site where as much colour information as possible is being compiled.

Photographer's Rights
As things are a bit quiet on the site at the moment, here's a useful link to a UK site that sets out our rights as to when and where we can legally take photos, advice from a lawyer who lectures at Herriot Watt University, along with a useful downloadable pdf you can print out and keep in your camera bag. I'll leave the link on this page for a week or so then transfer it over to the links page. Click here to go to the legal advice site
