April 2013 Adjudication – Birmingham

A very successful Adjudication was held at Hillscourt over the weekend and I enclose the Results Sheet where you will note there was a good pass rate in each section – especially the Masters where four of the six applicants achieved the highest accolade for photographic merit – the Master.

The venue proved extremely suitable to our needs. We had very slick organisation by the host Federation – Midland Counties PF – and many people have been in touch commenting on the friendly atmosphere throughout the weekend even though you could feel the tension in the room during the assessments.

I will be issuing the badges to those who were not in attendance in the next few days. Certificate preparation is in hand – with so many achievers we are having to replenish our stationery but they should be with Federation Secretaries shortly.

November 2013 Weymouth

Things are progressing well and we were delighted Di Tilsley, the WCPF Awards Officer, was able to be at Hillscourt to continue with her planning for this event. In addition, Ian Taylor – N&EMPF Awards Officer attended as they are due to host in November 2014. I am on course to issue the Entry packs in mid August.

December 2013

The take up continues to be good at Credit level and is proving ideal for those who do not wish, or have no intention of attending, their assessment. We only have one for Distinction Print and two for Distinction PDI at present. As this is a one day event anyone who wishes to enter this closed event at D level had better get their skates on.

I will keep you posted on how things progress in the Summer. Entry packs will be issued a week or so after I have completed the November issue.

April 2014

Following Clive Tanner’s recce at the Belfast Adjudication I know he is being very active sourcing a venue etc and details will be announced shortly.

Here are the Rules and Entry Form to enter the forthcoming KCPA Annual PDI Competition.
The entries must be received by August 11th
The Presentation of the Images is on Saturday 28th September
The judge is Leo Rich ARPS, DPAGB, APAGB, EFIAP/b and he will be present on the 28th to comment on his choices.
This is an individual entry, maximum of 6 images per photographer

KCPA AUDIO VISUAL COMPETITION 2013

Of course, the day of our annual Audio Visual Competition, heralded the start of Spring, and dawned cold and frosty with lovely clear blue skies, and as we arrived at the venue the sun was shining brightly and the temperature steadily climbing. If you want to plan good weather for an outdoor event choose a date when an Audio Visual day is taking place and you can be assured of sun!!!!

The event, being hosted jointly by Maidstone and Folkestone, was being held in the Cornwallis Academy, Maidstone, a central location in the county, but I am not sure that fact boosted our viewers on the day. Members from both Clubs rallied round and soon the venue was ready to accept the attendees and Judge for a welcome cuppa, before the start of proceedings at 10am sharp. There were 29 sequences representing 11 Clubs and offered for viewing in bite size pieces, not too long sitting still and time for chat over tea, coffee and cakes in between!

Our Judge was Photographer Barbie Lindsay, EFIAP/b, MPAGB, FBPE. Barbie is a renowned Award winning photographer nationally and internationally as well as being a top class judge and I do believe she has been known to produce audio visuals herself. She had already viewed the sequences several times in the comfort of her own home, but sat with the audience to watch them all again on a huge screen with superb all round sound, which as she said in her summing up showed up all those imperfections, both in sound and dust marks on the images.But she said in her remarks that “The sequences were very professionally put together and therefore the result was 50% technically assessed and 50% subjective to personal taste.

We all enjoyed a delicious lunch and then the final session culminated in Barbie’s deliberations and the announcement of the Awards and a vote of thanks by both Chairman of Maidstone Ann Bridges and President of the KCPA Clive Tanner. A well organised and almost seamless projection of the sequences was driven by Bob Brisley of Folkestone, and the whole event, planned and executed by Ann Hughes, Derek Hodge, Bob Brisley and Melanie Chalk was a resounding success.

The Awards were as follows:

Don Foster Maidstone CC won First and the Folkestone Town Council Trophy and Best Photography with Shoreham Air Show
Sonja Hoxey Maidstone CC won Second with The Gardener’s Year
Ray Bridges LRPS, CPAGB, ADPS, BPE2* Maidstone CC won Third and the Audience Vote with Bert

Jeffrey Wagner Isle of Thanet PS won Best Sound with Waterloo
Melanie Chalk CPAGB Folkestone CC won Best Transitions with Questions About Angels
The following were awarded Highly Commended:
Brian Penny St. Mary’s Bay CC with Hot Air Balloons
William Manser Sevenoaks CC with Pendragon
Peter Allen LRPS Bexleyheath PS with Clouds
David Cooper Malling PS with Somme 1916

Barbie, here with the award winners, unfortunately Don Foster winner of the First Place and Best Photography in the Competition was absent on the day and could not be pictured with his awards, William Manser, Highly Commended was also missing from the line up.

DIAMOND JUBILEE COMPETITION 2013 Hosted by Eastbourne Photographic Society

The Judge was Glyn Edmunds APSARAS EPSA EFIAPS ARPS DPAGB

The Diamond Jubilee Competition took place on Saturday 23rd March, a bitterly cold day, not conducive to walking along the Prom! The venue, the Birley Centre, was a wonderful facility, and when we arrived, was thronging with people partaking of the coffee and delicious cakes. It was soon time to go to in to the splendid viewing room, ample to seat us all comfortably and we all enjoyed the viewing of all the entries. Another break and time to buy more raffle tickets and eat more cake, the raffle prices were limited but very very worthwhile if you were a winner NIK software, I am truly envious of the winners. We then all shuffled back into listen to the Judges Comments and as always you agreed with some of his choices and not others but the outcome was quite clear cut with an outright winner Ashford Photographic Society with 141 points. There were joint second places for Tonbridge and Invicta with 134 points closely followed by Folkestone with 132 see the TABLE of results for all the clubs placings. The Winner of the Best Image Of the Competition was “Lioness With Cub by Bob Devine who is from Ashford Photographic Society.

Clive Tanner President of the KCPA gave a vote of thanks at the end of the very successfully run competition. He praised the planning, organising and running of the event ably lead by the Chairman of EPS Roy Morris. He thanked everyone who had played apart especially the catering team. He said the choice of judge was inspired , he thought Glyn was a perceptive and eloquent judge. He mentioned the sponsors NIK software who donated wonderful prizes for the raffle and lifted a financial burden from the organising committee.

Of 50 Clubs that comprise the KCPA only 24 sent entered!

The Executive Committee would be interested to know why some clubs were not interested in entering? With the age of Digital this prestigious competition is very easy to enter! Did you know it was taking place? We’re there reasons you didn’t enter? We would really like to know, like any Committee we think we are getting it right, but if you don’t tell us we don’t know we aren’t getting it right! Let us know. contact@kcpa.co.uk
